The mission doesn’t end with service

Your service was built around a mission. Your wealth should be too.

Military service requires preparation, discipline, adaptability and a long-term commitment to something bigger than yourself. Your financial future deserves that same level of intentional planning.

But military financial decisions are rarely simple.

Retirement systems, TSP accounts, insurance elections, survivor protections, PCS moves, deployments, VA benefits, civilian career changes and tax considerations all interact. Too often, these decisions are evaluated separately rather than as parts of one financial picture.

Overtime Military Wealth helps you see how those pieces connect and where additional planning may strengthen your future.

Our defining principle

Military benefits are one part of a financial strategy. They should not be the entire strategy.

The Overtime Wealth System
Signature perspective

The militarytransition gap.

Your military career may end before your next financial chapter is fully built.

Leaving military service can change a household’s financial picture in several ways at once.

Some military retirees receive ongoing retired pay. Others separate without an immediate military pension. Many begin civilian careers, launch businesses or reassess their insurance, health care and investment needs.

The goal is a coordinated strategy appropriate to you, rather than an assumption that every service member has the same benefits.

A different kind of financial conversation

You deserve more than a benefits checklist.

Understanding your benefits is important. Understanding what to do with your financial future is a much larger conversation.

Overtime Military Wealth connects financial education with broader conversations about ownership, business development, long-term planning, protection and family legacy.

We believe the best financial strategies account for the person behind the numbers.

IYour service history matters.

IIYour family matters.

IIIYour next chapter matters.

And your financial strategy should reflect all three.

Military financial education

Know your benefits.Understand your options.

We are preparing a military financial education series. These are the first guides in development. Until each one is published, the official source listed with it is the best place to start.

Free, confidential financial counseling is also available to eligible service members and families through Military OneSource and installation financial readiness programs.

Official sources are listed for reference only. Overtime Military Wealth is not affiliated with these agencies, and listing them does not imply their endorsement. New guides will be published in Wealth Insights.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Don’t see your question? Ask it in a private consultation.

Request a consultation
Do I need to be retired from the military to work with Overtime Military Wealth?

No. Overtime Military Wealth is for active-duty service members, members preparing to transition, veterans, military retirees, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses and families. Priorities differ at each stage, and the conversation starts from where you are.

Can you help me understand my military pension and TSP?

Yes, as education and planning coordination. We can help you understand how your retirement system, any retired pay you are eligible for and your Thrift Savings Plan fit into your broader plan. Your service history determines which retirement system applies to you, and the TSP is an individual account that is separate from military retired pay. Confirm official figures with your finance office, DFAS or tsp.gov.

How do I evaluate SBP alongside other family protection options?

The Survivor Benefit Plan provides a monthly annuity to an eligible survivor in exchange for premiums deducted from retired pay, and the election is generally made before retirement. Declining or reducing spouse coverage generally requires your spouse’s notarized consent. We help you look at SBP alongside life insurance, savings and your family’s income needs so the decision fits the whole plan.

What happens to my life insurance when I leave active duty?

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) continues for only a limited time after you leave. You may be able to keep coverage through Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) or convert to an individual policy, but deadlines and health-review rules apply. Check VA’s SGLI and VGLI pages for your dates, and review private coverage with a licensed insurance professional.

Can VA disability compensation be considered in my broader financial planning?

Yes. We can help you understand how compensation you receive or expect may affect household cash flow and retirement coordination. For example, military retired pay is generally reduced by the amount of VA compensation unless you qualify for Concurrent Retirement and Disability Pay or Combat-Related Special Compensation. Overtime is not accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs and does not prepare, present or file VA claims. For help with a claim, contact a VA-accredited representative through va.gov.

Can you help me evaluate business-building opportunities after service?

Yes. We can help you think through business ownership, entity structure, capital needs, tax considerations and how a business fits your family’s financial goals, coordinated with your attorney and CPA. Free training is also available through the SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development. Overtime does not guarantee financing, business performance or eligibility for any veteran-specific program.

Can VA home loan benefits fit into a long-term real estate strategy?

They can be part of one, within the program’s rules. VA-backed loans are made by private lenders for a home you will live in, and they require a Certificate of Eligibility and lender approval. They cannot be used to buy a vacation home or an investment property. We help you see how homeownership fits your wider plan.

What should I review financially before separating from service?

Common starting points include how your income will change, health care coverage after service, your TSP options, life insurance (including SGLI and VGLI deadlines), any retired pay or VA benefits you may be eligible for, your emergency reserves, and your estate documents and beneficiaries. The Transition Assistance Program covers many of these topics, and a planning conversation can help you put them in order.

Is this only for military officers or high-income veterans?

No. Overtime Military Wealth was created for service members and military families at every rank and stage of service. Each conversation begins with your goals and circumstances.

Does Overtime Military Wealth provide financial education or personalized planning?

Both. The educational content on this page is general and is not advice for your situation. Personalized planning begins with a private consultation and is subject to a written agreement. Tax, legal, insurance and investment services are provided by appropriately licensed professionals.
